Difference between Photorespiration and Dark Respiraton

Obviously, if you have come to my blog post it is just going to be out of curiosity on what is the difference between photorespiration and dark respiration. In my last post I spoke about the difference between photorespiration and photosynthesis (If you still haven’t checked it out click here).

Difference between photorespiration and dark respiration

Here is table showing you 14 differences between photorespiration and dark respiration:

PhotorespirationDark respiration
1. Photorespiration means the process of respiration which takes place where carbon dioxide is given out which is the opposite process of photosynthesis.Dark respiration is a form of respiration in which carbon dioxide is released without the presence of light.
2. Photorespiration is dependent of light.Dark respitaton is independent of light.
3. Photorespiration takes place in the C3 plants and rarely in C4 plants.Dark respiration occurs in all living tissues of living organisms.
4. Photorespiration is dependent on Calvin cycle.Dark respiration does on depend on Calvin cycle.
5. Takes place in cytoplasm, chloroplast, peroxisomes and mitochondria.Takes place in cytoplasm and mitochondria.
6. Photorespiration involves glycolate pathway.Dark respiration involves glycolate pathway, Krebs cycle and terminal oxidation.
7. Photorespiration consumes O2 at two places and relases CO2 at only one place.Dark respiration consumes O2 at terminal oxidation and releases CO2 at several places.
8. In photorespiration one molecule of NH3 is released with per molecule of CO2.In dark respiration there is no production of NH3.
9. In photorespiration substrate is glycolate. In dark respiraiton substrate is glucose.
10. In photorespiration there is no production of energy rich molecules such as ATP.In dark respiration there is production of energy rich molecules such as ATP, GTP, NADH2 and FADH2.
11. By the process of photorespiration carbon economy of plants is maintained. In dark reaction so such role is played.
12. Photorespiration is an energy waste process.Dark respiration is an energy producing process.
13. Temperature required for photorespiration is 25-35℃.Dark respiration is not temperature sensitive.
14. In photorespiration hydrogen peroxide is formed. In dark respiration hydrogen peroxide is not formed.

What is photorespiration ?

Photorespiration means the process of respiration which takes place where carbon dioxide is given out which is the opposite process of photosynthesis. The enzyme RuBisCo oxygenates RuBP wasting the energy which was produced by photosynthesis. It obstructs the process of photosynthesis.

If you want to know the dual nature of the enzyme RuBisCo click here.

What is dark respiration ?

Dark respiration is a form of respiration in which carbon dioxide is released without the presence of light. In dark respiration CO2 is released and O2 is taken up which results in oxidation. This takes place by the route of glycolysis
