Since we were young we have only been taught that “Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” and we believed in it without having a single doubt, but ever questioned that why is it known as the powerhouse of the cell like what is the reason behind this ? This is what we are going to be covering in our today’s article.
Why mitochondria is known as the powerhouse of the cell ?
We know that cell is the unit of life and without cells there would be no existence of living organisms be it plant or animals. Cells constituent a lot of material but today we are only going to be focusing on one aspect that is mitochondria. It is clear that mitochondria is present inside the cell, but exactly where ? It is present in the cytoplasm (A gelatinous fluid inside inside the cell) of the eukaryotic cells.
Mitochondria are tiny, membrane bound organelles which help in releasing energy from the food we eat and this process is known as cellular respiration and if cellular respiration takes place under the presence of oxygen it is called as aerobic respiration. Hence, it is known as the powerhouse of the cell.
